1987 Treating Parkinson’s Tremor with Deep Brain Stimulation

    Posted on October 15, 2026October 15, 2026

What if surgeons could suppress tremor without permanently destroying brain tissue? In Grenoble, France, neurosurgeon Alim-Louis Benabid and neurologist Pierre Pollak investigated electrical stimulation of the thalamus in people with severe tremor.

In 1987, their team reported combining a surgical lesion on one side of the brain with continuous stimulation on the other. High-frequency stimulation could suppress tremor through an implanted electrode connected to a pulse generator.

Crucially, the stimulation could be adjusted or switched off. The work helped establish modern deep brain stimulation as an alternative to destructive surgery.

Later developments extended the approach to other brain targets and additional symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The breakthrough introduced a way to influence malfunctioning brain circuits through controlled, adjustable electrical stimulation.
